Before revenue coat lightly rub around the surface with steel-wool, a kitchen scouring pad, or even very lightly with fine sandpaper.
Appropriately the desired number of coats, supply the whole thing a good rubbing with steel wool (#000) then vacuum the dust. Now you are ready for oil.
